"Unreal Tournament III" or "UT3" is a first-person shooter video game and the next installment of the Unreal series. UT3 is the sequel to Unreal Tournament 2004 and the original Unreal Tournament. The game is developed by Epic Games and will be published by Midway Games. It will be released on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3 Unreal Tournament III will be primarily an online multiplayer first person shooter game offering several game modes, including large-scale Warfare, Capture-the-Flag, and Deathmatch. UT3 is also expected to include an extensive offline single-player game with an in-depth story.
Players will be able to design their own custom user-made maps and game modes with their computer, and make them available via the Internet for online multiplayer or single player play, adding much variety and increasing the game's longevity and replay value.
Using the Unreal Engine 3, it is designed mainly for online multiplayer gaming. However, in a recent interview with Game Informer, the developer revealed that UT3 will not have the usual UT single player experience. Instead, there will actually be a storyline, and the members of the player's team will have their own personalities. This is a change from the normal UT single player campaign, which simply mimics the multiplayer mode in a ladder format. According to a video released during Electronic Entertainment Expo 2007, the game has a release date of November 2007.
In 2005, Unreal Tournament 3, previously known as Unreal Tournament 2007, was announced for Windows and PlayStation 3. On January 25, 2007, Midway made an official announcement stating that the newly renamed game, Unreal Tournament 3, would be released for Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Playstation 3. A demo will be released for PC before the full game's release.
Unreal Tournament 3 is actually the fourth game in the Unreal Tournament series. The original Unreal Tournament is considered by Epic to be the first series. They were followed by UT2003 and UT2004, which Epic considers the second series. UT3 is part of a third generation.
Sony announced at E3 2007 that, through a deal made with Epic, Unreal Tournament 3 will be a PlayStation 3 timed console exclusive during 2007. The Xbox 360 version will follow sometime in 2008. The statement by Tretton confused many, therefore Mark Rein made it very clear during the Midway conference at E3 2007 that UT3 would ship for both the PC and PS3 in November, with the Xbox 360 version coming the following year. It was also announced that the PS3 version will be able to use PC-created mods and levels. Epic plans on adding some level of support for the Xbox 360, but due to its closed system there is less freedom. This is the main reason this version of the game is coming out later.
