"Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" is an multimedia project developed and published by LucasArts along with Dark Horse Comics, Lego, Hasbro, and Del Rey. It consists of a video game, a tie-in novel by Sean Williams, action figures, a comic book, a reference book and an roleplaying game supplement. The materials are scheduled for release in Spring 2008. The game will be released on the seventh generation consoles PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS as well as PlayStation 2; there are no plans to release PC, Wii or Xbox versions of the title. However, even as late as July 17, 2007, Amazon.com lists The Force Unleashed as a Windows XP release.
According to Lucasarts, the next generation versions of the game will utilize Pixelux Entertainment's "Digital Molecular Matter" (DMM) and NaturalMotion Ltd.'s euphoria technology. DMM is a real-time physical simulation technology that causes materials to act in the game world as they would in the real world. Wood splinters, glass shatters, and metal dents. Euphoria is a behavioral-simulation engine that gives all characters a nervous system, meaning that their animations are determined in real-time as reactions to stimuli. For example, characters unbalanced on a bridge will try to balance themselves by flailing their arms or attempt to catch the edge as they fall.
The game will take place sometime after the rise of the Galactic Empire, and allow players to control Force-users. Motion images seen to date highlight the engine's use of Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter, showing Force-users using telekinesis and Force lightning. Wikipedia |
